Description:
Every Diabetic Counts is a program sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services,
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The program provides diabetes self-management education (DSME)
training to Medicare beneficiaries. The DSME training helps Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes learn how
to manage the disease and live longer, healthier lives. CMS, along with the participating Quality Improvement
Organizations (QIOs), Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs), Community Health Workers (CHWs), and the Health
Disparities Quality Improvement Organization Support Center (HDQIOSC) can assist Medicare beneficiaries in
reaching these goals by working together to increase awareness and improve understanding about diabetes and
its complications.
Virgin Islands:
The Virgin Islands Medical Institute, Inc. (VIMI) completed it's first Diabetic Self Management Education Program
on January 14, 2009. The training was held at the local AARP office in Sunny Isle and ran for a total of
ten(10) weeks. A total of eleven (11) Medicare beneficiaries completed and graduated the course.

The Virgin Islands Medical Institute, Inc. (VIMI) completed it's second Diabetic Self Management Education Program
on April 7, 2009. The training was held at the local Red Cross and AARP offices in Sunny Isle and ran for a total of
five(5) weeks. A total of nine(9) Medicare beneficiaries completed and graduated the course.
